SOFTBALL: Ball State hires new assistant coach

Another coach was added to the Ball State University softball team this year.

The team named Caroline Cubbage as a graduate assistant coach for the 2008 season. Cubbage is the third coach on the team's roster along with head coach Craig Nicholson and assistant coach Stephanie DeFeo.

Nicholson said Cubbage will work with the team's academics, organization and outfield.

Cubbage was a three-time All-American softball player at Lynchburg College. She also earned the Old Dominion Athletic Conference player of the year twice.

She batted .459 in her college career and led Division III with 19 home runs in 2006.

Cubbage has a Bachelor of Arts degree in sport management. She is studying athletic administration for her master's degree.

"She's just out of college so she does a good job of relating to the players," Nicholson said.

Nicholson became the Cardinals' coach last season after Terri Laux's contract was not renewed following the 2006 season.

In his first season as the coach, the softball team finished 22-34 and 8-14 in the Mid-American Conference.
