President's contract extended

Board of Trustees offers Gora deal to stay at BSU until 2012

President Jo Ann Gora's contract was extended three years beyond the original expiration date, according to Ball State University officials.

Kevin Burke, director of university communications, said the Board of Trustees voted unanimously to extend Gora's contract, which originally set to expire in August 2009, until June 30, 2012.

Gora could not be reached for comment.

Jamie Manuel, vice president for Student Government Association, said he was pleased to hear Gora's contract was extended.

"I think President Gora has done a lot of really exciting things for us," Manuel said. "It's everything from seeing the aesthetics of campus to be more appealing to prospective students and their families to her strategic planning."

Manuel said he did not know what to expect from Gora during her extended time at Ball State.

"No matter what it is, I know she does it because she loves Ball State," he said. "She's already rejected job offers from University of Connecticut and Purdue."

Sophomore Shayna Smith said she was uncertain whether the contract extension is good for Ball State.

"She is doing good things for the libraries and certain academic programs," Smith said, "but I don't think she is viewing students' opinions fairly and balanced. I don't know if extending her contract is good or bad."

Burke said Gora will also receive a retention bonus if she remains at Ball State until 2012, Burke said. The bonus will equal 20 percent of the sum of Gora's salaries between 2007 and 2012.

Junior Zach Reeves said he did not care about Gora's salary.

"The contract doesn't matter to me because as far as I know she has done nothing to benefit the university nor hurt the university," he said, "so what is $300,000 going to do?"
