OUR VIEW: Big investment

AT ISSUE: Ball State is putting more than $2 million into the president; Gora needs to give time, energy in return

It's good to be president, especially when Ball State University offers its president a three-year contract extension loaded with expensive bonuses.

President Jo Ann Gora accepted a good offer from Ball State and could make more than $2 million by the time the contract ends five years from now and all her bonuses are paid. Not everyone has the opportunity to make that much in about five years. Obviously, the trustees believe Gora is worth every penny of the contract and that they want her to stay. Of course, if her capital campaign goes as planned, Ball State will have a lot more money to play with.

However, if the university is willing to promise this much money to Gora based on her performance since 2004, she had better keep the momentum up. During her reign at Ball State, the university has achieved a continuous amount of national attention that exceeds any past recognition. The campus has grown to accommodate a new residence hall, two academic buildings, a parking garage and numerous other additions. Programs are actively seeking national rankings, and Ball State is receiving more grants. Gora is very determined and gets what she wants for the university.

In the past, Gora has shown her gracious side by deciding to use money intended for her inauguration for scholarships instead. At the time, it was good to see a president who cared more about the students than the money. This would be a great trend for her to continue.

Ball State's positive steps forward must continue now that Gora has accepted the contract extension. She must spend the next five years working her hardest to make Ball State the best university possible. We know Gora can do whatever she sets her mind to do, and we expect to see her set her mind to continue improving Ball State.
