Ball State wins own tournament

Ultimate Frisbee team rushes field after beating long-time rival in finals

The Ball State University Ultimate Frisbee club defeated its long-time rival, the Indianapolis Masters, to clinch the Indiana State Tournament Championship.

The club rushed the field in jubilation after a short completion scored the final point, giving Ball State a 13-11 victory in the 24th annual tournament.

Senior Thomas Vittetau is the president of the club and organized the event.

"This is great; it's a huge win for us," he said.

Vittetau said there were 12 teams in the tournament, including Ball State's A and B teams. Eight other colleges participated, including Butler University, Huntington College and Hanover College, he said.

Indy Masters was one of two club teams that played in Sunday's tourney, which was held next to the baseball fields east of the tailgating parking lot. The Masters beat Ball State in last year's final to win the tourney's wooden trophy, which comes complete with a silver frisbee mounted on the front, Vittetau said.

Ball State and the Masters have developed a rivalry over several tournaments, Vittetau said, often because the two teams find themselves facing each other in the finals.

A man who asked to be referred to as "Toine" played for Ball State and he is a former Ball State student, he said.

"[It was] absolutely a big win," Toine said. "Some of [the Masters] went to Ball State, so there's a lot of camaraderie off the field, but it's pretty intense on it."

Toine said Ball State practices five times a week for at least a few hours each time.

The hotly contested final went back and forth, and the physical nature of the game resulted in one Ball State player receiving a dislocated shoulder. Vittetau said the player was fine.

Ball State trailed seven to five at halftime, but a flurry of scoring at the beginning of the second half evened the score at nine all.

The Masters briefly regained the lead, but a long score by Ball State evened it again at 10. Ball State capitalized off of turnovers to score their final three points and secured the championship.

Vittetau said Ball State has already played in two other tournaments this year, finishing fourth at club sectionals and second at an Oberlin College tourney. He said the club plans on participating in two more events this year.
