In honor of David Letterman lending his name to the new Media and Communications Building, the Daily News presents the top ten stories you might have missed this summer. It's a list of the good, the bad and the downright ugly. Take it away Paul.
10. Parking cost increase - As if finances for college students weren't bad already, Parking Services was nice enough to increase prices at meters all over campus. To compound such a great gesture of good will, the office declined to inform anyone but those who were smart enough to dig through Webmail with features we didn't know existed.
9. Vampire porn woes - Yes, there was a pornographic film shot on campus that went on sale at various local retailers this summer. Thankfully, "Vampire Diaries" wasn't a summer blockbuster and the director who tricked officials into using campus for the shoot isn't rolling in the dough as a result.
8. New tennis court - After 30 years, the tennis court at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center has finally been replaced. Now, the Cardinals can play without twisting an ankle or tripping over the ducks that confused the massive cracks in the old court for the Duck Pond.
7. Queen squared - Two Ball State students showed off their looks and smarts this summer at beauty pageants. Danielle Sylvester was crowned the 2007 500 Festival Queen in Indianapolis and Nicole Rash was crowned Miss Indiana 2007. Sorry ladies, no male students received similar honors.
6. Blockbuster alumnus - Doug Jones, a Ball State alumnus, starred as the Silver Surfer in "The Fantastic Four: Rise of Silver Surfer." No word on whether playing Charlie Cardinal from 1980-1982 had anything to do with landing the role, but we're willing to bet it did.
5. Oprah - If you're confused, you need to brush up on your Letterman history.
4. Tuition increase - Not surprisingly, the Board of Trustees approved another tuition increase to keep the streak going. We all knew it was going to happen, but there was that one shred of hope deep down that this year might be our year. So much for hope.
3. Letterman Building - You knew it was coming, so we might as well get it out of the way. After donating money for scholarships and other ventures, Ball State's most famous alumni will have his day in September. Then, Letterman can stop complaining that nothing in Indiana bears his name.
2. Bye-bye Ronny - Former men's basketball coach Ronny Thompson resigned after a whirlwind of allegations and speculation. Throughout it all, the media and public were left making blind guesses in the dark about what was going to happen. Hopefully, other coaches and the university now realize the importance of keeping the public informed at all times.
1. Hello Billy - Now that Billy Taylor has officially been named the men's basketball coach, the mess that Thompson left behind can start to be sorted through and figured out. Likewise, the program has a fresh face and a fresh slate to start out the new school year. Based on the fan meet and greet and other public interaction, it looks like Taylor is on the right track with the community.
