MEN'S BASKETBALL: Ron Hunter reported to be new coach

Ball State University is close to reaching a deal with IUPUI men's basketball coach Ron Hunter, ESPN.com reported Monday.

Hunter has spent 14 seasons as head coach of the Jaguars and is the program's all-time leader in wins with 207. While at IUPUI, Hunter has also compiled a .545 winning percentage and led the program to its first-ever NCAA tournament berth in 2003.

Ball State Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tom Collins refused to comment Monday on anything regarding the Cardinals' men's basketball program. Hunter was also unavailable for comment Monday, but IUPUI Sports Information Director Ed Holdaway said Hunter will be available Tuesday.

If Hunter does take the Cardinals' men's basketball vacancy, he will be inheriting a program that lost a school-record 22 games last season. Former coach Ronny Thompson also committed the same NCAA secondary violation twice in his first year with the program. However, the NCAA unearthed several other violations in a report it sent to the athletics department July 11.

Calls attempting to reach President Jo Ann Gora were redirected to Associate Vice President for Marketing and Communications Tony Proudfoot. However, Proudfoot declined to go speak in-depth about the NCAA letter.

"It's an ongoing investigation, so we can't really comment," Proudfoot said. "We are looking into it and taking it very serious."

Collins said he "had no idea" when the investigation would conclude.
