The Ball State administrator who saw 48 student-athletes violate the NCAA's "extra benefits" rule has been hired as assistant principal at an Indiana school.
The Nettle Creek school board named David Land, former director of athletic compliance at Ball State, to the job at Hagerstown Junior-Senior High School on Tuesday.
Land left Ball State in late 2005 after student-athletes were caught using their extra benefits to buy textbooks for friends rather than just themselves, among other violations.
Nettle Creek Superintendent Joseph Backmeyer said Wednesday that Land was selected from a pool of more than 15 applicants. Land's administrative experience and his ability to communicate made him a good candidate for the job, Backmeyer said.
Backmeyer said he was aware of the NCAA violation, but it did not play into his decision to hire Land.
