Students produce animated video

Management company hopes project will get airplay on MTV, VH1

The management company for the Dave Matthews Band and O.A.R. has commissioned a group of Ball State University students to produce a music video.

The video is for "Holiday Heart," a song by singer-songwriter Joel Burleson, who performs as Ki: Theory. The song is available on Ki: Theory's new album.

The students are from Ball State's Institute for Digital Intermedia Arts and Animation group. IDIAA was created with grants to fund the Digital Exchange, an opportunity that involves students with innovative and immersive educational experiences.

"Red Light [Management company] had contacted Ball State to see if we were interested with the project, and we contacted student animators," IDIAA director John Fillwalk said. "Students get to pick and choose what projects they want to work on."

Entirely animated, the video features a mechanical bird, designed by art director Matt Pamer of Public Domain design, who has also done graphics and illustrations for Hot Hot Heat, Willie Nelson and Guster.

The storyline for the video was created by Burleson, Pamer and Adam Foley of Red Light Management.

"After the three of us came up with different story lines independently, we found that we all had a similar view for the video," Foley said. "When we finished, we came to Muncie and met with John Fillwalk and the team."

The video tells the story of a mechanical bird and its relation to nature and technology, Fillwalk said.

The video is designed in 2-D in a 3-D space, Fillwalk said, and the design makes the CD cover art created by Pamer seem to come to life.

Students have been working on the design of the video, which is about halfway finished, since early February. When it is distributed, the video has the possibility to be broadcast on popular music television sites.

"Everyone's goal is to be on MTV or VH1, but that's down the line," Foley said. "John's a young artist and a good, developing artist, and we're first going to get the video on online sites and key pacemaking blogs."

The Ki: Theory music video is the first for IDIAA has done because it deals with animations.

"The main importance is for students to get involved in projects to help them get jobs in the future," Fillwalk said.

Foley said he has been pleased with the students' efforts so far.

"It's been a good team effort. The most important thing is that everything comes together. You have to work as a team to accomplish that," Foley said.
