Driver's licenses see new format

Vertical layout, digital security features to reduce counterfeits

A new Indiana driver's license format was introduced Friday at the BMV License Branch in Pine Valley, Ft. Wayne. BMV branches in Anderson, Connersville, Greenfield, and Liberty will introduce the new license Tuesday, and the remaining Indiana branches will begin distributing the new license in August.

The new format features embedded digital enhancements detectable with a black light and a two-dimensional barcode on the back.

In addition to the new security devices, the cardholder's picture will be in two places, making it more difficult to manipulate or counterfeit the license. Licenses for people younger than 21 will be vertical to ensure distinction between people of drinking age and people younger than drinking age. The license also lists the date in which the owner will turn 18 and 21.

Previously-issued Indiana driver licenses will remain valid until their expiration date and can be replaced up to six months before they expire.
