Printing becomes wireless

Bracken Library offers laptop printing via the library Web site

Bracken Library is the first and only Indiana college that offers a service that allows students and faculty to print documents from their laptops to computers in the library.

Student Government Association members approached Arthur Hafner, dean of University Libraries, during Fall Semester with the idea for a laptop printing service for Bracken Library, Hafner said.

By allowing students to print documents from their laptops, the library gives students "increased support of research material from home," he said.

Brad Saust, assistant dean for Library Information Technology Services, said the service has had more than 300 users since it became available at the end of Spring Semester.

"The library uses a print management system that keeps track of the number of print jobs, but this service was an add-on to what was already available," he said.

Print-on, the printing service that makes the service available to students and faculty, is similar to services used at hotels to allow guests to print documents from their rooms, he said.

"When I saw the sign in the library, it made me feel like I would be able to save a lot of time," junior Keith Taylor said.

Hafner said the service is easily accessible and without security risks.

"The library took the necessary steps to ensure the safety of the students and their information," he said.

There are no specific system requirements to use the service, but students must have a Ball State e-mail account.

Laptop printing is a valuable service that was implemented to "enhance productivity for student research and class projects," Hafner said.
