WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Coach's contract unsigned

Months after coming to Ball State, Boos' paperwork delayed by typo

Even though coach Dave Boos has coached the women's volleyball team in a spring tournament and received commitments from two players since he came to Ball State University in January, he has not signed his contract.

Boos said a typo in the contract caused him to send it back to the university, but would not say what the typo was.

"I don't think it's important," he said.

The university could not supply the contract after a Freedom of Information Act request was submitted for it Monday.

Boos said he needs to set up a meeting with Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tom Collins to discuss his contract, and hopes to have it complete as soon as possible.

Collins said even though Boos has not signed his contract, he is still legally able to represent the university without violating NCAA rules.

Judy Burke, director of university human resource services, said she didn't know why Boos hadn't signed the contract.

Boos said he has been paid for his time at the university, but wouldn't disclose how much. He also wouldn't say what his salary was.

Boos came to Ball State from the University of Minnesota where he was an associate coach.

Boos has received two verbal commitments to play for him during the 2008 season: Christie Waters, a Muncie Burris Laboratory School junior, and Brittany McGinnis, a junior from Fraser, Mich.

Ball State started the spring portion of its season at the Purdue Tournament last weekend. The Cardinals lost to Purdue University (2-1), Indiana University (2-0) and Valparaiso University (2-0).

Boos said the feedback he received from players about this weekend was that team chemistry was at an all-time high.

"It's a great building block for the fall," he said.

This weekend the team will compete against four teams at the Indiana Invitational.
