Multiple Sclerosis research supporters will join together this Saturday to raise an estimated $45,000 at the East Central Indiana Multiple Sclerosis Walk inside Worthen Arena.
Karen Kovac, director of development for the Indiana chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, said having the walk indoors will allow people with mobility issues easier access to the events.
"Individuals that have MS, family, friends and company teams can all participate," Kovac said.
Sponsors, including Marsh Supermarkets Inc., will provide free goodie bags, food and drinks to participants.
Members of Ball State University's Code Red Dance Team are yearly volunteers for the event, and former Code Red coach Michelle Bowyer is assistant director of chapter programs for the Indiana MS Society.
Bowyer said the Code Red dance team volunteers for the walk to give back to their community.
Code Red captain Brianna Hynek said volunteering for the walks in previous years has been a fulfilling experience.
"Being able to see every single person finish the race makes me proud to volunteer for this cause," she said. "It's amazing to see all of the support that is given to people with MS by their friends and family."
The Ball State walk is estimated to bring in between $40,000 and $45,000. This year, Kovac said about 200 volunteers are registered for the walk, with more expected to sign up at the event.
Walks across the country last year raised $53 million and had about 200,000 participants in more than 700 different cities across the country, according to the National MS Society.
Approximately 400,000 people in the United States and an estimated 2.5 million worldwide are diagnosed with MS, with about 200 more diagnoses made every week. Most diagnoses occur between the ages of 20 and 50, according to the National MS Society.
