While the Ball State University softball team suffered another loss Tuesday, one Cardinal made history against the University of Michigan.
Senior Kelli Jeziorski led the Cardinals (13-23, 4-4 Mid-American Conference) at the plate, as she went 2-3 with a single and a home run. The home run was her seventh of the season, a new Ball State record.
Despite the 6-1 loss, coach Craig Nicholson said he was happy that the Cardinals played hard throughout the entire game.
"I felt like we did a good job battling to the end of the game," he said.
Jeziorski passed Misty Snider (1999) for sole possession of the Ball State record.
Jeziorski also moved into a tie for the most career home runs at Ball State. She now has 12 for her career and is tied with Ruth Hjelmeland (2000-2003).
"It's always nice to be recognized for my accomplishments," Jeziorski said.
Jeziorski moved from her normal position in left field to center field Tuesday to replace injured freshman Brittney Jones. Jeziorski said she is comfortable with the move to center.
Jones suffered a mild concussion diving for a ball Sunday against Northern Illinois University.
With Jones out, sophomore Katelyn Gunderson started in right field for the Cardinals and sophomore Allie Pennock moved from right to left field.
Pennock was also named MAC West Division Player of the Week Tuesday. She hit .571 last week, as she went 8-14 with a double. She also had a run batted in, scored five runs and stole a base.
The Cardinals will host a doubleheader against in-state foe IUPUI today.
"We'll try to come out, play hard and keep getting better," Nicholson said.
Freshman Elizabeth Milian will get a break from pitching as junior Amanda Pick will start game one and sophomore Laura Masch will start game two.
Masch has not pitched since March 14 against Jacksonville University. On the season, she is 1-3 with a 12.06 ERA in five appearances.
