Police search for suspect in gun incident

Former basketball player questioned as witness by Muncie investigators

Muncie police continue to search for a suspect involved in an assault that led to the arrest of a Ball State University student Friday morning at Linden Place Apartments, police said.

Investigator Darrin Clark said someone pistol-whipped apartment resident Anthony Lee in the head, then fired a single shot through Lee and roommate Stephen Brandon's apartment door. Clark would not release the name of the suspect.

Lee was treated at Ball Memorial Hospital and released later that night, Clark said.

Ball State senior Julius Williams was arrested at 3:30 a.m. Friday on suspicion of disorderly conduct for fighting and tumultuous behavior, Clark said. Williams was released later that morning, he said.

According to the Indiana Code, disorderly conduct is a Class B misdemeanor, which, if

convicted, can lead to a maximum of 180 days in prison and a fine of up to $1,000.

Clark said Williams and three people got into an argument with Lee and Brandon at Dill Street Bar & Grill late Thursday night. Lee and Brandon returned to their apartment, but Williams and his friends arrived later, and another fight broke out.

The roommates went inside their apartment, at which point the suspect fired one shot through their door, Clark said.

Police brought former Ball State basketball player Darren Yates in for questioning as a witness because he was with Williams at the time of the incident, Clark said. Yates was not arrested, he said.

Yates was dismissed from the basketball team in December 2005 because of conduct that was detrimental to the team. He only played one game his final season because of a personal injury.

Clark said no formal charges have been filed against Williams yet. The Delaware County Prosecutor's Office will decide whether to press charges once the Muncie Police complete the investigation and submit all the evidence, Clark said.
