Two undefeated teams that have continually battled for the top spot in the Mid-American Conference will meet this weekend when Ball State University plays No. 50 Western Michigan University at home.
"Definitely we are excited about the match; it is for first place in conference," coach Bill Richards said. "Whoever wins this match will have the inside track at the conference champion and be the heavy favorite."
Last year the Broncos won the MAC tournament after the Cardinals earned the MAC regular season championship.
"The regular season is for the conference championship," Richards said. "This is very important."
This week the Bronco's Brad Crosby was named the MAC Player of the Week. Crosby won his 100th career win against the University of Northern Illinois.
Ball State played Western Michigan at Notre Dame in the fall season. Last week's MAC Player of the Week and No. 1 Ball State singles player, Joe Epkey, defeated Crosby during their fall contest.
Last year the Cardinals defeated the Broncos 4-3, and are ready to defend their MAC regular season title.
"We always come out to play to prove something and this match is not going to an exception," Jose Perdomo said. "Saturday's match is the most important match of the season besides the MAC championship match."
Ball State plays Western Michigan at 1 p.m. Saturday at Cardinal Creek Tennis Center, weather permitting.
"They have always been our rival since before I came to BSU," Perdomo said. "They have a solid team this year."
