The opera "53rd Street," which shows tonight and Sunday, will allow students to get a glimpse of life on the streets of New York City.
The opera was composed by Jody Nagel, associate professor of music theory and composition.
"53rd Street" is the story of two homeless men living on the streets of New York and their treatment by various groups of society. In order to have a better grasp on their characters, most of the cast participated in Student Voluntary Services Poverty Simulation.
The Ball State Opera Theatre has paired up with Teamwork for Quality Living and the Virginia B. Ball Center for Creative Inquiry to spread the word about poverty and homelessness.-á
Craig Priebe, associate professor of music performance, baritone at Ball State University, is the lead role of Bum No. 1.-áPriebe ensures a 'dramatically engaging' experience for the students who attend the show.-á
Benny, the only named character in the opera, will be played by Mark Boyle, microcomputer/network analyst.
Director Tammie Huntington said students can expect a different kind of opera. There are moments that the music is Broadway-like, she said.-á
Huntington said she feels that the 'music deepens the insight' of the work.-áShe said "53rd Street" provides an excellent opportunity for students' preconception of opera to be set aside.-á
