Mud volleyball is back at Ball State University with Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and FIJI fraternity having their Smackdown Mud Volleyball Tournament at 10 a.m. Saturday at the volleyball courts by Johnson Complex.
FIJI philanthropy chairman Tom James said the proceeds from the event will go to the sorority and fraternity's philanthropies, Court Appointed Special Advocates and The Red Cross, respectively. The tournament is open to everybody on campus and costs $50 for a team of six, he said.
Mary Olds, Kappa Alpha Theta philanthropy chairwoman, said the tournament used to be a regular, indoor volleyball game, but this year she and her sorority sisters decided to move the games outdoors into the mud in order to attract more people.
"I've worked a lot with people who help plan the mud volleyball tournament with the residence halls, and they've been supportive and are willing to help us out as well," Olds said. "I don't really see it as a competition between different events, I just know it's really popular, and people would be willing to do it more than once a year."
James said he and his fraternity brothers helped the sorority reserve the fields and provide the water for participants to wash off the mud. The FIJI brothers also will be the referees during the event, he said.
"We're the work force," James said. "They do a lot of the organization, and we'll do a lot of the work to make sure it runs smoothly."
Olds said the tournament is usually near the beginning of the semester, but because they changed to an outdoor venue, it was moved to before finals because of the nicer weather.
"We tried to do a lot of our planning as soon as we could," she said. "We've worked really well together to try and make this event really successful. I hope people take the time to come out and support two great causes."
