Quarterback Zach Jones, a redshirt freshman on the Ball State University football team, has decided to leave the program, coach Brady Hoke said Monday.
Jones, a 6-foot-7, 220-pound freshman from Morris, Ill., did not see any action in the 2006 season after redshirting in 2005. Jones was competing with freshman Emmanuel Lewis for the No. 2 spot behind Nate Davis. Hoke said Jones made his decision on Friday.
"He didn't see himself taking over that position," Hoke said. "He's a guy I really wanted to stick around. He just felt it was best for him playing time-wise that he needed to make a move."
Tanner Justice will now compete with Lewis for the backup spot.
