About 180 women will joust, sing and race their way through Sigma Chi fraternity's Derby Days week of events.
For Derby Days chairman Nicholas Miller planning the philanthropy was more than just getting the sponsors and participants. The event had a special significance because his parents were Ball State University greek alumni, he said.
"They told me Derby Days was one of the most talked about and biggest events on campus when they were here so I wanted to bring back that spirit to greek life and the Ball State community," Miller said.
Sigma Chi President Jeff Kennedy said planning for the event began in the fall when entrants, families and Muncie businesses were contacted for financial help. Contests occur throughout the week, and then at the end of the week, a trophy will be awarded, he said.
Miller said proceeds will go to the Children's Miracle Network for Riley Children's Hospital. Last year, the week raised $1,500 and this year it raised $3,200, he said. Miller attributed the increase to getting more sponsors from the Muncie community and more girls participating, he said.
"In the past we've had mostly greek girls participate because other girls were unsure what Derby Days was," Miller said. "We've been more public this year so I think that's what has caused more [non-greek] girls to join."
Because of other events happening in the fall, spring is the best time for Derby Days especially because the weather is generally getting better, Miller said.
"It also is a time for memories and allows the graduates to go out strong," he said.
In case of bad weather, Miller said most of the events could be played inside the Sigma Chi house.
