Women's Week kicks off

Committee organizes activities, speakers about social issues

A yoga practitioner, social inequality activists and activist grandmothers, among others, will entertain and inform Ball State University students this week about the role of women in today's society.

Women's Week kicks off today with five guest lecturers who will discuss women's issues.

It is part of National Women's History month, which is celebrated across the country, Julee Rosser, Women's Week chair and assistant director of women's studies, said. The week is dedicated to celebrating women's achievements and experiences, she said.

The week's events will consist of art exhibit receptions and guest lectures, Rosser said. The week will not focus on a specific issue or guest speaker, she said, but rather multiple issues related to women.

"We try to not bill one speaker over the other," Rosser said. "We see each of them as being top-notch presentations, performances and exhibits."

A 26-member committee began organizing the week of events in August, Rosser said. It was responsible for selecting guest lecturers, among other responsibilities, she said.

"We have a Women's Week Committee made of people from different departments with different ideas," she said. "Then we find out more information about the speakers."

The committee selects different speakers every year to so students and faculty can learn about numerous issues, Rosser said. This year's selections will include comedian Alba Sanchez, Indianapolis entrepreneur Stephanie Oden and 18 other speakers, she said.

"A few speakers are very expensive, so we have to chose who will appeal to the student body more," Amanda Ostoich, fundraising assistant and women's studies intern, said.

Committee members approached campus and community organizations to raise money for the week, Ostoich said. She said she personally raised about $1,200 for the week.

"People on campus make it happen," Rosser said. "We appreciate the smallest donation to a larger one."

Two of the biggest donations came from Student Government Association and Housing and Residence Life, Ostoich said. More than 40 organizations made donations.

There will also be other related events related to National Women's History Month that the Women's Week Committee did not organize, Rosser said. Hillel, the Jewish organization at Ball State is offering a lecture on the roles of women in Judaism and Feminists for Action arranged a music night at Mo's Tavern in the Village, Rosser said.
