The Ball State University Police Department moved during Spring Break to a location that better fits the needs of students, staff and faculty, university officials said.
Most of the UPD personnel moved to the former Alpha Tau Omega fraternity house at 200 N. McKinley Ave. last week, Director of Public Safety Gene Burton said. The building is at the corner of McKinley Avenue and Washington Street.
The UPD began operating out of the building Wednesday, and the administrators remaining in the former office will move to the new location next week, he said.
"Everybody I've talked to likes the new facility better," Burton said. "It'll give us a better opportunity to serve the community."
Business Affairs and Student Affairs made a joint decision in late summer or early fall last year to move the location of the police station, said Alan Hargrave, associate dean of Student Affairs.
"The other one was really inadequate," Hargrave said. "There was a facility that was available. The other one had major issues. It was just an old house."
Alpha Tau Omega vacated the building in 2002 because the fraternity's membership dropped and it could no longer afford to pay its loans, he said.
Renovations were made to improve the former fraternity building, Hargrave said. It needed new lighting, flooring and electrical work, he said.
A better location, structure and layout in the new building were all reasons for the move, Hargrave said. The old building will be torn down, he said.
