Although the Ball State University men's golf team shot 12 strokes better than the first day of the Pinehurst Invitational, the Cardinals are still 40 stokes behind co-leaders Indiana University and University of Michigan.
With a day two score of 309, the Cardinals are in 17th place out of 18 teams competing.
Monday sophomore Matt Shumaker and senior C.D. Hockersmith had team-low four over par for the second round. Senior Wayne Denger leads Ball State, shooting a 14 over par after the first 36 holes.
"We just got off to a disappointing start," coach Mike Fleck said. "I thought we would come out of the gate stronger, but now we have to fight our way back and try and head in a positive direction."
Ball State is one of four teams from the Mid-American Conference competing in the tournament. Currently Eastern Michigan University is in 12th place, the University of Toledo is in 14th place and Northern Illinois University is in last place.
"If the conditions are better, our goal is to crack 300," Fleck said.
