Company tries to fix local business ties

Discount program gives free membership to stores, students

Despite some recent problems, the Student Savings Club has managed to keep students and the majority of its businesses happy, said Asher Lisec, Student Government Association president.

Students Savings Club, a program that organizes discounts for students at local businesses, suffered after a miscommunication with businesses. The club started allowing students to get a discount by showing their student ID along with or in place of the printed card provided by the Student Savings Club, Lisec said.

Patrick Moriarty, president and founder of the Student Savings Club, said the company had to implement disciplinary measures because a sales representative was rude to a Buffalo Wild Wings manager.

"He didn't represent our staff and company," he said.

Lisec said the CEO of the Student Savings Club does not want a negative image of his company.

"He wants to please the [Ball State University] community," she said.

Moriarty said the Student Savings Club is taking what it has learned from this incident and are making sure it doesn't happen again.

The program will now be provided to businesses at no charge, he said.

Students will be able to voice their opinions to Lisec or any representative of the Student Savings Club on what new businesses they would like to see in the program, Moriarty said. He expects businesses to give a good discount, he said.

"We want them to give the best discount they can give," Moriarty said.

The company loves the word "free" and always wants to save students more than 10 percent.

Lisec said the free membership is a good reflection on the Student Savings Club.

"It shows they care about Muncie's local businesses and BSU students," she said.

Moriarty said he has been impressed with Ball State, particularly because Lisec has been a good representative of the university.

"We think BSU is a great community and school," he said. "I appreciate Ball State."

The Student Savings Club allows students to receive discounts in Muncie restaurants such as Burger King, 909 Grille and Papa John's Pizza, according to the Student Savings Club Web site.
