BASEBALLThe Ball State University baseball team played eight games over Spring Break, going 5-3.In the Myrtle Beach Hyundai-Isuzu Classic, the Cardinals lost 3-1 to Georgia Southern University on Mar. 9 then lost 5-0 to Coastal Carolina University Saturday. Ball State finished the weekend defeating Bethune-Cookman College 8-6. In the middle of the week Ball State traveled to Winston-Salem, N.C. to play a two-game series against Wake Forest University. The Cardinals picked up a pair of one-run victories, winning 7-6, 6-5 respectively.The Cardinals finished break with the Ball State Invitational, their first three home games of the season. The Cardinals lost the first game to the University of Evansville 9-3 but won their next two games. Ball State defeated Le Moyne College 6-5 in ten innings Saturday and Bowling Green State University 11-7 Sunday.Senior Eric Earnhardt made his first appearance for the Cardinals this season after being suspended for violating team policy for the team's first 13 games. Earnhardt started the final five games during break.
GYMNASTICSThe gymnastics team traveled to Ypsilanti, Mich. to participate in a quadrangular meet hosted by Eastern Michigan University. The Cardinals finished in fourth place with a score of 189.075, as host Eastern Michigan won with a score of 193.575.The best overall scoring for the Cardinals was in the floor exercise as the team earned a total of 48.400. Junior Erica Gilkerson led the way in the event, scoring an individual mark of 9.775.The team then left Muncie for Anchorage, Ala. for a pair of meets against the University of Alaska-Anchorage.The Cardinals won Friday by a final score of 189.425 to 186.700.Multiple gymnasts stepped-up for the Cardinals with Jenna Tarkington winning the vault competition with a 9.600 while Kristin Sprague won the uneven parallel bars with a 9.700. Laura Shockey was the highest scorer for Ball State on the balance beam with a score of 9.600 and Lauren West won the floor exercise with a score of 9.625. The Cardinals also defeated the Seawolves 192.750-190.275 on Sunday.
MEN'S GOLFAfter nearly five months since its last tournament, the Ball State men's golf team returned to action for the Pinehurst Invitational in Pinehurst, N.C.. The Cardinals are in last place out of the 18 teams competing. With a combined score of 321, the Cardinals are 28 strokes behind current leader Southern Methodist University. Senior Andy Skillman leads the Cardinals with a score of 78. Skillman is tied for 54th place overall. The Pinehurst Invitational continues today with day two of the three-day, 54-hole tournament.
MEN'S TENNISThe Ball State men's tennis team went 0-2. The University of Michigan swept Ball State 7-0 Mar. 9 . Joe Vallee was competitive, losing to Michigan's Mike Sroczynski 6-4, 6-7, 1-0. The Cardinals made it interesting against UNLV, but fell 4-3 Wednesday. Ball State lost the doubles point to UNLV; Jarrod Epkey and Vallee won its doubles match. Aaron Phillips, Jose Perdomo and Bret Berryman each won their singles match.
MEN'S VOLLEYBALLBall State University's men's volleyball team lost three matches in ten games over Spring Break, winning only one game as they faced two ranked teams.Ball State dropped its shot at an upset against No. 7 Ohio State University 3-1 (30-21, 28-30, 30-26, 30-23). Nick Meyer tallied 17 kills and Eric Schulte had a career-high 11 in the loss.The Cards traveled to Los Angeles where they faced No. 5 UCLA twice. The Cardinals failed to win a single game against the Bruins and finished the first match with a negative attack percentage. Ball State failed to score more than 23 points in a single game as they struggled against the national powerhouse.The three straight losses are the most in a row for the Cardinals since they lost four straight in the first five matches of the season.
SOFTBALLThe Cardinals (7-14) went 3-5 during the week in Florida, including a 1-3 record at the Speedline Tournament in Tampa.One bright spot was the new single season home run record for the Cardinals. Junior Abby Gross hit Ball State's 19th home run of the season in the team's second game against Jacksonville University on Wednesday.Ball State picked up two wins against Jacksonville, 6-2 and 3-1, to begin the road trip. The Cardinals then dropped a double-header to the University of North Florida, 3-1 and 6-2, Thursday.Freshman Elizabeth Milian pitched a complete game, one hitter in a 3-0 win against the University of Wisconsin Friday.The Cardinals finished the tournament by losing their final three games. Ball State lost 4-3 to Dartmouth College, 4-1 to the University of Southern Florida and 7-0 to Florida International.
WOMEN'S GOLFBall State got back in the swing of things last weekend at the Rio Verde Invitational in Arizona. The Cardinals finished 18th out of 18 teams with an overall score of 961. Despite the final score, coach Katherine Mowat was pleased with her team's performance.Baylor University won the event with a score of 886."I think I've found the groove," senior captain Kallie Harrison said, "I wish I could take this Arizona weather back with me." Harrison finished tied for 28th individually with a three-round score of 229, the best total score for Cardinal golfers. Individual standouts for the Cardinals were Harrison and freshman Kirsty O'Connor, who shot a 73 in the opening round.
WOMEN'S TENNISThe Ball State women's tennis team knocked off the University of North Carolina-Wilmington 4-3 on Thursday, but struggled in its other matches, going 1-3 over Spring Break.The Cardinals fell to South Carolina State (6-1), College of Charleston (4-3) and Charleston Southern (5-2).In the victory over Wilmington, the Cardinals took the doubles point to start the match. Haly Calderwood and Sophie Quist teamed up at No. 1 to win 8-2 and Emma Retter and Katherine Rist won at No. 3, 8-6. In singles play, Quist (6-2, 6-3), Calderwood (7-6, 6-2) and Rist (6-7, 6-1, 7-5) picked up wins to secure Ball State's victory.
