If there was any rust from not playing for two weeks, the Ball State University women's tennis team certainly didn't show it.
With the doubles team setting the tone, the Cardinals cruised to a 6-1 victory against Butler University Friday.
The No. 1 doubles team of Haly Calderwood and Jennifer Pollack continued its strong play, cruising to an 8-1 victory. At No. 3 doubles, Stephanie Farrar and Polina Askerko won 8-0.
The Cardinals rode that momentum into singles, winning five of the six singles matches.
"We were very solid from Haly all the way down," coach Kathy Bull said. "It was just a good overall team win for us. It was one step for us this weekend and we hope we can take the next step."
The most intense match occurred at No. 3 singles. Pollack and Michelle Hawes slugged it out for more than three hours with Pollack coming away with a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-1) victory.
At No. 4 singles, Christine Stromberg avenged a loss to Becky Jenkins from the fall season, defeating Jenkins 6-3, 7-6.
"I told Christine that we were going to get it done when it counts," Bull said. "For her to get that in straight sets down on their courts at Butler, that was a huge accomplishment. She played very well."
Ball State's only loss in singles play occurred at No. 1 singles as Sophie Quist lost to Molly Casperson 6-4, 6-3.
