TRACK: Cards ready for smaller competition

Following large meet, Ball State adjusts to psychological demands

Overshadowed by the size and competition of last weeks Meyo Invitational at the University Notre Dame, the Anderson Invitational will be less of a challenge for the Ball State University women's track and field team.

Sophomore Lanae Stovall said although the buildup to the two meets is different, it is important not to lose focus.

"It's definitely a whole different story preparing for [Anderson University] or Bowling Green [State University] than for the meet like at Notre Dame," Stovall said. "You have to think it through and not go in over confident."

The Anderson Invitational will include teams like Depauw University and Bellarmine University.

Junior Amber Williams, like Stovall, said preparation is different psychologically more than it is physically.

"We really do not practice differently and you always have to go in totally ready to go," she said. "Mentally though, it's a whole different ball game from last week, but you still have to bring your A-game."

The meet is set to kick off at noon Saturday beginning with the field events.

After this weekend, the Cardinals have less than two weeks until the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships, which the entire season has been based around.

Coach Randy Heisler said that although it's nice to compete and win in the meets leading up to the MAC Championship, the conference is really all that matters.

"We always want to compete and do as well as we can, every week," Heisler said. "But the better we do at saving the kids from getting overworked, or hurt, the better position they will be in heading into MAC."

Stovall said she trusted the coaches and the advice they have for the team.

"You always have to have faith in the coaches because they have the best idea on how to do well," Stovall said. "Using their experience is going to be the best for us and if we do that we will end up having a good chance."
