Led by junior Amber Williams' record-setting first place finish in the 60-meter hurdles, the Ball State University women's track and field team finished third at the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships.
Williams ran the hurdles in 8.19 seconds, setting a new indoor MAC meet record and Akron Fieldhouse record. She was also named the 2007 Most Valuable Performer at the championships held Friday and Saturday in Akron, Ohio.
Williams also took second in the 60-meter dash and third in the 200-meter dash.
For Williams everything is falling into place a few weeks before she competes at the Indoor National Championships in Fayetteville, Ark.
"I want my spring break to be in Arkansas," Williams said after the Ball State Open Jan. 12. "Having a good, healthy season and staying ahead of where I was last year, while still improving into MAC, will put me in good shape."
The University of Akron won the meet for the third straight year with a total of 136 points. Western Michigan University took second (112), followed by Ball State (82.5), Central Michigan University (62) and Miami University (55.5).
The 3,000-meter run also proved to be a highlight for the Cardinals as freshman Ali Bishel placed third with a time of 9:53.99 and senior Rose Lehe finished fourth in 9:55.36.
Lehe also placed third for the Cardinals in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:28.09. Sophomore Lanae Stovall placed third in the pentathlon with a season-best score of 3,523.
Stovall said since the whole season focused on the MAC Championships, faith and trust had to be with the coaches.
"You always have to go in confident, but not too confident," she said. "The most important thing though is to keep faith with the coaches because they know what is going on. They always have the best idea."
Junior Voni Ferguson (400-meter dash) and seniors Amanda Ponsot (mile) and Tamelca Lewis (triple-jump) each provided fifth place finishes for the Cardinals.
