Slates start campaigning for SGA bid

Two presidential candidates receive nomination, begin advertising goals

The Student Government Association nominated United Initiative and Vote Bare as the two presidential slates Monday.

Students can vote in the SGA elections on Feb. 26 and 27 at bsu.edu/votebsu.

Matt Lacy and Matt Walker were nominated for At-Large Senate, but there were no nominations for Judicial Court, University Senate or Off-Campus Senate.

It is common for those positions to not receive nominations, Elections Board Chair Kiersta Barnes said. The positions will later be filled after a student applies, is approved by a credentials committee and receives a majority Senate vote, she said.

VOTE BARE

Presidential candidate Matt Bare said his team will focus on improving safety, technology and dining on campus.

"We are going to work with University Banquet and Catering to make things more affordable for student organizations," he said.

Vice presidential candidate Caleb Boucher said the slate is going to work on increasing the number of Mac computers on campus, along with getting them to print in the library. Vote Bare also wants to extend Ball State University's wireless service beyond campus, he said.

The slate also hopes to improve safety on campus with more call boxes and better lighting around campus.

Both slates are campaigning for a dead week to be implemented the week before finals where professors do not add any new material and review previous material.

UNITED INITIATIVE

The slate's goals are to improve innovation, technology, education and diversity on campus.

Presidential candidate Betsy Mills said she is the organization's most senior member, with three years of experience.

"The organization has meant so much to me," she said. "For three years I've been trying to better campus in any way I can."

Secretarial candidate Jessica Tindal said the slate will focus on multicultural involvement on campus, including getting multicultural academic advisers for minority students.

"We are all diverse," she said. "We like to think we represent campus."

United Initiative plans to work on coordinating a Spring Semester Homecoming and a left-turn arrow at the Scramble Light as part of its innovation improvements, according to the slate's official presentation packet.
