The two executive slates running in Student Government Association elections made a joint statement asking supporters and voters to avoid making personal issues such as sexual orientation part of the 2007 election.
U.N.I.T.E.D. Initiative and Vote Bare met Monday night to denounce some online conversations about the election.
"Don't delve into our lives and don't attack us on things we shouldn't have to defend," Betsy Mills, U.N.I.T.E.D. Initiative presidential candidate, said.
Conversations need to focus on issues, slate members said. Neither side condones or supports derogatory remarks and asks supporters to conduct themselves with dignity, they said. Students need to choose Student Government Association leaders based on issues, not personal lives, they said.
"We've all said from the beginning that we are all friends," Caleb Boucher, Vote Bare vice presidential candidate, said. "Obviously, we are all part of the same organizations, all fighting for the same goal. We never wanted to make this personal to begin with."
The presidential candidates will make a live joint statement Wednesday night during the Slate Debate. Voters can watch that debate at 7:30 p.m. on CardinalVision 57 and Comcast Channel 61.
