Student Government Association is discussing plans to combine the honors of making the Dean's List and graduating cum laude.
Junior Eric Maroun, member of the academic affairs committee, said SGA began discussing these changes because students who were named to the Dean's List every semester were not guaranteed to graduate cum laude. To be on the Dean's List, a student must achieve a 3.5 grade point average for the semester. To graduate cum laude, a student must achieve a cumulative GPA between 3.6 and 3.799.
"Students could go throughout their entire college career and be on the Dean's List every semester and not graduate with honors," Maroun said. "It's unfair to go through all that hard work and not be recognized."
Provost Terry King said he couldn't imagine the two being combined because they are two completely different honors.
"The Dean's List is an honor given out by the colleges every semester, and magna cum laude is given out at graduation by the university," he said.
Maroun said King's statement was a little disheartening.
"It's a fair statement, and I definitely see where he's coming from; however, I'd like to see what else he's open to," Maroun said. "I'd like to explore some other solutions."
Another solution to the problem is to raise the requirement for the Dean's List, Maroun said. A 3.6 GPA is the national average for cum laude, so SGA will look into the possibility of raising the standard for the Dean's List to a 3.6 GPA, Maroun said.
SGA will discuss the issue further at its meeting Wednesday.
