A SHOT IN THE DARK: Avoid stress; live like Bueller

love it how Ferris Bueller picked his last absence and used every minute to its fullest. He busted his principal, ate pancreas, saw priceless works of art and even danced on a float. He got away with murder for one last day and literally brought his pretty girlfriend and best friend along for the ride.

It's right about now, on Wednesday, that I could go for one of those days. I would love to steal a Ferrari and drive with the top down just to get away from what every professor is crushing on this week and next: midterms.

Why does every teacher find it necessary to cram this week and next with wretched tests but think they are giving us a break when they let us out seven minutes early the Friday before Spring Break? Yes, we'll take any time away from class, but seven minutes? Come on!

So, are you feeling it? Feeling the cinder blocks on your shoulders and knowing that sleep isn't even an option for the next 14 days? The Bookmark Caf+â-¬ becomes vital when cramming for core classes that will probably never come in handy, but sitting on AIM or text messaging obscenities to your friend across the table (you know you do it, I do it too) isn't going to raise your grade point average.

The stress is pretty unbelievable, and I sure know that I'm feeling the pressure. How on earth do we handle it? Yesterday I tried crying for 15 minutes, and while that usually helps, it did not write my character analysis for acting or get my sociology read, as much as I would have liked it to. Naps rock, but that too didn't educate me about the history of ballet. As I'm writing this now, I take my own advice.

Pace. Pace yourselves when dealing with loads and loads of homework. And how much more amazing will Miami be knowing everything is done and done well? Free time is hard to come by, but if you're graced with it then take advantage of it to get some more reading done or finish up an assignment.

Also, I find that getting more than half of the assignment done, taking a break (or a day) and coming back to it makes the assignment look less overwhelming. Writing a "to do" list will help you feel accomplished every time you cross another item off your list. Staying organized and really falling in love with your planner eases stress automatically. Breathing is good, too, in case you feel like falling apart. I forget to do that sometimes. Breathe, that is, not fall apart.

At the end of the day, it's just a test. It's just a paper. It's just a project. We all have bigger fish to fry than dying an early death over a book report. Stay on top of your game, and everything will fall into place like it always seems to if you pace and keep it together.

And if these suggestions don't work for you, then yes, I recommend watching as much TV on DVD as you can get away with and consuming at least a pint of chocolate Haagen-Daaz ice cream. I mean, really, you'll be in paradise in less than two weeks.
