Water main breaks

Traffic accident destroys fire hydrant, floods Jackson Street and Tillotson Avenue intersection 77-year old woman remains in critical condition at Ball Memorial Hospital

A traffic accident at the corner of Jackson Street and Tillotson Avenue left a 77-year-old woman hospitalized, and the intersection closed off because of flooding on Monday night.

Muncie resident Ruth Matson turned in front of Ball State University senior Joseph Allardt III, causing him to swerve into a fire hydrant at 4:37 p.m., Muncie Police Sgt. Joe Krejsa said. When the car and truck were moved, the fire hydrant was destroyed, breaking the water main beneath the street, he said.

"I looked out [the window] and saw that two cars were in an accident," witness Krissey Harris said. "One seemed to have hit the fire hydrant."

Allardt declined to comment about the accident.

Matson was transported to Ball Memorial Hospital and remains in critical condition, Krejsa said. Allardt was uninjured.

After the accident happened at the corner of the CVS Pharmacy parking lot, water began to shoot up out of the ground, causing the roads to flood, witness Bryon Safewright said.

It will probably take the water company two days to repair the water main, Krejsa said. As of Monday night, eastbound and westbound traffic on Jackson Street was blocked off and northbound and southbound traffic on Tillotson Avenue was down to one lane.

The accident is still under investigation, and no charges are being filed yet, Krejsa said.
