TRACK: Cards win four individual titles

Team finishes third despite not competing in all of the events

Being shorthanded did not stop Ball State University's women's indoor track and field team from finishing third at the Bowling Green Quadrangular Friday.

The Cardinals did not have participants in the triple-jump or 5,000-meter run, but won four individual titles and one relay in the first scored meet of the season.

Coach Randy Heisler said going into the meet, the Cardinals would be without competitors in certain events because the coaching staff didn't want to push the squad to run multiple events.

"We're not worried about losing out on some opportunities this early in the season right now," Heisler said. "The focus is on conference and so stretching the kids right now is not something we are going to do."

The Cardinals ended up with 125 points, beating out IPFW, which had 56. The University of Cincinnati won the meet with 181.5 points, beating host Bowling Green State University by 16.

Heisler, who is in his first season as coach, said he is happy with the way Ball State has performed so far, but is excited for the future.

"We are really short on people, and with that we can't take as many chances," Heisler said. "We're looking ahead though, and the kids are doing really well."

Ball State didn't win an individual title in the field events; its highest finish was in the high jump as sophomore Jessica Genovese claimed second with a jump of 5-2.

Ball State won multiple titles in running events, including the 60-meter hurdles title junior Amber Williams won. Sophomore Lanae Stovall finished second and freshman Katie Johnson third in the 60-meter hurdles.

The other titles were claimed by junior Voni Ferguson in the 400-meter dash with 57.65 seconds. In addition, Williams won the 200-meter (25.32), and senior Rose Lehe in the 3,000-meter (10:17.88).
