Coach Randy Heisler said it was important not to overwork the women's indoor track and field team this week as they prepared for the Bowling Green Quadrangular tonight.
"We're going to be as careful as we can heading into tomorrow night and make sure not to stretch anyone," Heisler said. "We're giving up a lot of points in holding back the kids, but hopefully it will count down the stretch."
The first-year coach is hoping by keeping some players out of the lineup, the Cardinals will be rested and prepared for a strong run at the end of the conference season.
There will be no one participating in the 5,000 meter or the triple-jump events at the meet, Heisler said.
The quadrangular, held at Bowling Green State University, is the first scored meet of the year for Ball State. Teams from the University of Cincinnati, Bowling Green and IPFW will be in attendance.
Junior hurdler Amber Williams is excited for the beginning of the season and is looking toward the rest of the season.
"I'm happy with everything right now and ahead of where I've ever been at this time so that's good," Williams said. "I'm looking forward to the season, and hopefully we'll keep improving."
Last year the Ball State squad cruised past the rest of the field at the Bowling Green Quadrangular, winning nine events and scored 81.5 points higher than the rest of the field.
The teams' focus is on the Mid-American Conference, Heisler said, and uncertainty about the meets and events are keeping his judgments on the modest side.
"I'm not sure of the surfaces at the venues we're competing in right now, and we don't want anyone hurt [because] we can't afford it," Heisler said. "We're giving up a lot of points this weekend and in the next few weeks by not stretching the kids. But with focus on conference, that's just what we have to do."
