Spring fraternity rush begins

Orientation to focus on experience during first year as member

Ball State University men interested in going greek can learn more at the Go Greek informational meeting today from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the L.A. Pittenger Student Center Cardinal Hall B.-á

Unlike previous semesters, this meeting is oriented toward the first-year experience, Brian Starkel, Interfraternity Council vice president of recruitment, said. Potential members will learn about recruitment week and what a bid is, recruitment events and each fraternity chapter, he said.-á

"We will be going through the process of recruitment and talking about benefits of being a greek member," Starkel said. "A lot of fraternities just give the basic facts about each chapter, but we want to show them what it means to be greek. Then we'll be hitting on if they decide to pledge, what do they do next and what does it mean."-á

IFC President Eric Maroun said he thought the new recruitment methods would be beneficial. There will be a smaller number of men from each fraternity at the meeting, he said, and they will be better able to answer questions the potential members may have about each fraternity.-á

"We're always looking for quality guys who will make the greek community better," he said. "We want guys who will be developing leaders, having a high scholarship is a plus, and making a positive contribution to the greek community."-á

More information that will be presented at the meeting are the commitments a potential member will have if he decides to pledge, Starkel said. The men will be released for a 20 to 30-minute break, and then each chapter will have representatives talk about their fraternity, he said.

Maroun said from tonight until Thursday, potential members can visit the fraternity house to get more information. The fraternities will have events such as cookouts, poker and cornhole, he said.
