Owner expands Campus Cuts

Barbershop works to make customers feel more at home

Every guy needs a place to shoot pool, play video games and chill out, and Campus Cuts is the place for that, shop owner Algier Williamson said. There's just one rule, though: no profanity.

After relocating to the Village during the fall, Campus Cuts is expanding into more than just a barbershop.

Williamson, 29, tore out a back wall during Winter Break and added a pool table, foosball machine, small basketball hoop, TV and leather couch.

Williamson said he wanted to give customers some entertainment and make them feel at ease while in the shop. Customers must behave themselves, however, and keep their language clean.

"I want customers to feel like they're at home and be comfortable more than anything," he said.

Williamson, who moved his business to the Village from Calvert Street in the fall, said he has had more success at his new location - especially since his expansion.

"People are able to see in now and see what more this place has to offer, and that has helped me," he said.

Sophomore Randy Thomas said he started coming in after the expansion to get his hair cut, but he also went to hang out with Williamson.

"I stop in just to say 'hey,'" Thomas said. "He's a cool guy."

Thomas lives close to the Village and said the proximity is a plus for him because it is more convenient.

Williamson said he knows people have stress in their lives, and he wants Campus Cuts to be a place to relax and have fun.

"Customers always have something to worry about outside these walls," he said. "I want them to be able to escape and relax here."

Williamson, who has cut hair since high school, said there is usually a steady flow of customers every day.

"There is always a consistency in the people whose hair I cut, but there is always new people, too," he said. "I see about 20 to 30 people per day, 15 to 20 of which are regulars."

Williamson, who is the only person who works at Campus Cuts, said he works from 8 a.m. until around 11 p.m., if not later, seven days a week. Haircuts are $10, but Williamson said starting Feb. 1, they will be $12 before 9 p.m. and $15 afterward. The first haircut is free.
