New concerto will premiere at Emens

Ball State professor, Muncie Symphony to perform together

Ball State University professor Robert Palmer will join the Muncie Symphony Orchestra to perform a three-piece program 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Emens Auditorium.

The show, "Where Worlds Meet," will feature "Concerto in B for Piano and Orchestra," a piece written by Jody Nagel, Ball State professor of music theory and composition. Though Nagel has composed more than 200 pieces, this is his first concerto, which is a piece that features a soloist playing with an orchestra.

"The first movement contains a driving, motoric primary theme with a very lyrical second theme," Palmer said. "A reflective melody permeates the second movement with traces of jazz flavoring. The third movement is a non-stop tour-de-force."

Palmer and the orchestra will also perform "Overture to Candide," by Leonard Bernstein and "Symphony No. 9 in E Minor" by Antonin Dvorak.

Bohslav Rattay, Muncie Symphony Orchestra artistic director, said the pieces share the theme of being written in the United States.

"The collection is like traveling in time," he said. "The works each reflect the experiences of the composers in different times but the same country."

Palmer, who has performed at Carnegie Hall and in more than 30 states, said he looks forward to being part of the event.

"I am excited to make music with Bohslav Rattay and the Muncie Symphony Orchestra," he said. "[Rattay] is a wonderful conductor, and it is always a pleasure to perform with the fine musicians of the Muncie Symphony Orchestra. It is an honor to be part of the world premiere performance of this new piano concerto written by Jody Nagel."

"Where Worlds Meet" is a reserved-seating event, and adult ticket prices range from $15 to $25. Youth tickets are $5, and the event is free for Ball State students who get their tickets in advance.
