Muncie resident Ruth Matson died at 8:19 p.m. Monday after a car accident at Jackson Street and Tillotson Avenue.
Matson turned in front of Joseph Allart III, a Ball State University senior, causing him to swerve into a fire hydrant at 4:37 p.m., Muncie Police Sgt. Joe Krejsa said. When the vehicles were moved, the fire hydrant was destroyed, breaking the water main under the road, he said.
After the accident, water shot up out of the ground at the southeast corner of the intersection by CVS Pharmacy, witness Bryon Safewright said.
Muncie police and road crews blocked off eastbound and westbound traffic on Jackson Street and both northbound and southbound Tillotson Avenue was down to one lane. By Tuesday afternoon, all lanes were opened.
