MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Volleyball team drops both weekend matches, coach unhappy with serving errors

Last season, the Ball State University men's volleyball team didn't lose its first two matches until late February.-á This season it took five days.

The Cardinals (1-2) lost two matches over the weekend.-á On Friday, Penn State University defeated Ball State in straight sets (30-28, 30-22, 30-22), and on Saturday the Cardinals lost to St. Francis University in four games (30-28, 20-30, 30-27, 31-29).

"I thought our offense was horrible," coach Joel Walton said. "We are just too predictable on offense."

In addition, Walton said another problem for Ball State was its serving, as the Cardinals had 32 serving errors in the two matches.

Against Penn State, the Cardinals had 15 serving errors and a .795 serving percent.-á In the four games against St. Francis, Ball State had 17 serving errors with a .852 serving percentage.

"That just wasn't good serving," Walton said after Friday's match.

In the fourth game against St. Francis, outside attacker Nick Meyer became the second Ball State player during the rally scoring era to have 1,000 career kills.

Currently, Meyer needs 36 more kills to tie Jary Delgado for first place on Ball State's all-time kills list during the rally scoring era.

Meyer finished Saturday's game with 20 kills and a .105 attack percentage.

In addition, in the match against St. Francis Meyer set a new career-high for attack attempts with 57.-á His previous high had been 53 against IPFW in Feb. 2006.
