GYMNASTICS: Coach optimistic about team's freshmen

Despite losing to Kent State University Friday, gymnastics coach Lisa Simonton was happy with the performance of her freshmen.

Ball State University (0-2) fell to the Flashes (2-0) 194.575 to 189.350 on the road.

Freshman Megan Howard scored a 9.625 on the uneven bars to finish in fifth place. In addition, freshman Alex Tuthill scored a 9.575, and placed sixth on the balance beam.

"I thought our freshmen looked much more confident, I am very proud of how they stepped up tonight," Simonton said.

Senior Jenna Tarkington tied for first place on vault scoring with a 9.8. Junior Erica Gilkerson placed fourth on the balance beam and floor exercise.

"The scores for our vault and floor routines were the highest since I have been head coach here," Simonton said.
