BSU searches for associate provost

Position combines two unoccupied jobs in University College

In the continuing reorganization of administration at Ball State University, Provost Terry King is searching for an associate provost and dean of University College.

The person selected will be in charge of undergraduate affairs and organization for University College, King said. A future search will look for another associate provost to handle graduate-level programs and research, he said.

This division will help allow the associate provosts to concentrate on more specific issues and programs than previously, King said.

University College helps students in all programs with their classes through tutoring and additional instruction. It also handles freshman academic advising.

The associate provost and University College dean position is one of several created during the past year that combines and redefines existing jobs.

"There was a dean of University College and an associate provost, and neither one of those positions were filled, and I'm combining them so they will be the same person," King said.

Michael Haynes, director of Academic Advising, is the acting dean of University College until the search committee finds someone to fill the position.

"[King] developed the position, and it fits with some other positions he is developing in the future," Haynes said. "He has an idea, a philosophy on how he is envisioning all the parts of that."

Haynes took the dean position when the previous dean retired, and Haynes said he plans to stay with Ball State as director of Academic Advising after someone is found.

King said he filed the paperwork for the search in the middle of the Fall Semester, and the search committee will begin reviewing applications this week.

"It's completely open," he said. "As of now, I think we have a pool of candidates from outside. We definitely want somebody who has academic experience, someone for example, who has earned a doctorate."

He said he hoped to have the position filled by the end of Spring Semester.
