Freshman Travis J. Smith died following a car accident on Riverside Avenue on Saturday, Layne Cameron, Ball State University media relations manager, said.
In the car with Smith were freshman Ethan Whaley and junior Todd Lamkin, Muncie Police Sgt. Brad Arey said.
Lamkin, 21, was driving a silver Toyota Solara registered to Jessica and Lana Meyers, police said. Jessica Meyers is a friend of the students, police said.
Lamkin had some alcohol in his system, but he was not arrested at the hospital. It will take two to three weeks to get official results back from the state, Arey said.
"We believe he was under the limit, but it could be close," Arey said.
The two-car accident took place about 6:30 p.m. on Riverside Avenue between North Linden and North Reserve streets, he said.
As of 11:30, Whaley and Lamkin were still being treated in the Ball Memorial Hospital emergency room, hospital spokesman Neil Gifford said.
Arey said Lamkin had minor injuries and Whaley could have broken his leg and arm.
The other car, a blue Chrysler Pacifica, was driven by Krystyna Johnstone. The only passenger was her daughter, Halynkna Johnstone, Arey said.
The mother sustained chest injuries, the daughter had only minor injuries, Arey said.
Smith was a member of Ball State's men's golf team.
Ball State Athletics Director Tom Collins released a statement late Saturday expressing condolances.
"We are deeply saddened by the tragic news of the death of Travis Smith," Collins said in an athletics department press release. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and the members of our Ball State golf program during this difficult time."
