Before Saturday's meet against Miami (Ohio), Ball State women'sswimming and diving coach Laura Seibold-Caudill recalled the storyof one of her favorite memories during her 25-year tenure as theCardinals coach. It was a story about perseverance in which herteam was behind to the same Miami team a few years ago by 10 or 11points — if not more — heading into the final event.Everyone in the stands with the exception of the Cardinal's regularfans figured the meet was over because Ball State had to finishwith the top two spots in order to win.
The die-hard fans that decided to stay joined the Ball Stateswimmers standing on the sidelines in yelling their hearts out insupport of the swimmers competing in the final event. Ball Statedid finish in the top two spots in the event, "by like a tenth of asecond," and won the meet by one point. It is one of three favoritememories for Seibold-Caudill, and understandably so.
Alas, there was no come-from-behind victory for this year'sCardinal team, but they certainly made things interesting. BallState won six events, but fell 164-135 to Miami, who was picked towin the Mid-American Conference championship before the season.
Emily Aubie led the way with two victories in the 100 and 200butterfly. Kait Martin and Karla Bailey added wins in the 100breast and 50 free, respectively, while two relay teams, the 200free and 400 medley, won their events.
"I was really pleased," Seibold-Caudill said. "I thought weperformed really well. We could've pulled off the upset, but wejust kept getting touched out. It was a lot closer than the scoreshowed."
Mid-way through the meet, Ball State led 68-63, but Miami tookover in the 100 free and 200 back.
"If you look at the results, we were winning, but we keptgetting touched out (in the afore mentioned events). It's tough tohave been winning, but I'm encouraged by their driven attitude,"she said. "They were all into it. It's all about the team. That'sour theme for this year.
"This team has really gelled," she continued. "I credit ourassistant for pulling this team together. I think the seniors havedone a great job. I like the team attitude. I really think eachweek we're going to keep getting better and better."
This Friday, the team travels to Indianapolis to face IUPUI andSt. Louis. They return to Muncie on Saturday to face a toughMichigan State team that Seibold-Caudill had earlier said would bethe toughest team her squad had to face this fall.
