A Ball State women's swimming record was broken Wednesday nightagainst the Butler Bulldogs. Karla Bailey swam a 0:59.70 in the 100IM, beating Joey Gallagher's old record of 1:01.9. Therecord-breaking performance helped defeat the Bulldogs, 126-66.
Bailey, who also won the 100 back, was joined by eight otherBall State swimmers in winning their respective events, along withthe 200 IM relay, who, along with Mary Brinkoetter, Kait Martin,and Emily Aubie, included Bailey.
Along with Bailey's performance, Brittany Sayler added two wins(50 and 100 free) of her own. Aubie (100 IM), Brinkoetter (500free), and Martin (100 breast), Ashley Zastrow (1000 free),Michelle Arakgi (200 free), added five more wins for theCardinals.
Coach Laura Seibold-Caudill was very pleased with her team'sperformance, and like the men's team, changed the lineup to allowmembers of the team to swim events they normally wouldn't in ameet.
"(This type of meet) gives us a chance to be able to haveeverybody compete this year," she said. "It gives us a chance toswim different events."
"It's a small school," she said regarding Butler. "They had acouple of good swimmers, but not the depth we have. That's theirmain weakness. We swam really, really well."
Ball State finished with four events in which they took the toptwo spots. Butler does not have a diving squad, so the Cardinaldivers participated in exhibition.
Earlier in the day, Martin was announced as the MAC Swimmer ofthe Week, joining men's swimmer Kurtis Leer. This is the first timesince Jan. 28, 2003, that a pair of swimmers from the same schoolhad been awarded this honor the same week.
Martin, a senior, led the team last weekend with a pair of winsin the 200 backstroke in the IUPUI and St. Louis meet on Friday,and again Saturday against Michigan State. Leer was a member of the200 medley relay winning team on Friday, and also won the 100 and200 free against the Spartans on Saturday.
Ball State is now 4-4 overall and 0-3 in the MAC. They squareoff with Xavier on Friday in Cincinnati, before having a week offfrom competition for Thanksgiving Break.
