Both Akron's and Buffalo's women's swimming and diving teamswere better than Ball State coach Laura Seibold-Caudill hadexpected, as Ball State fell to both this weekend. Akron won Fridaynight's meet, 167-134, and Buffalo eased to a 192-108 victorySaturday afternoon. With the defeats, Ball State fell to 1-2 forthe season in dual meets.
Traveling such long distances to both meets on consecutive dayswas brutal, Seibold-Caudill said. Fatigue and soreness from theFriday's meet played a key role on Saturday.
"Having to travel such a long distance made a big difference,"she said.
Karla Bailey led the way for the Cardinals with three firstplace finishes, winning the 100 breast at both meets, and the 200breast at Akron. Emily Aubie and Kait Martin played key roles, withAubie finishing with three thirds in both meets. Martin finishedsecond in the 100 back at both meets, and added another second inthe 200 back at Akron.
Danielle Fisher contributed with a second in the 500 free atboth meets, and Sarah King finished second in the 50 free at Akron.Freshman Jennifer Dadlow dove to second place in the three-meterdiving event at Buffalo. The 200 free relay team of Bailey, Martin,King, and Dee Dee Woverton won at Akron.
"I wouldn't say we had bad performances," Caudill-Seibold said,"but both those teams had a little too much. It's hard to stayfocused (for the second meet) because you're sore and it's thetravel that killed us."
Caudill-Seibold was especially impressed by Buffalo, and hadnothing but good things to say about Buffalo's freshmen.
"They brought in seven freshmen that are incredible," she said."They're just going to dominate (the conference)."
The team's attitude after the meets was that of, "OK coach, theycan beat us in a dual meet, but we can beat them at the conferencechampionship," she said. "I like that attitude. I hope they keepthat attitude up."
"We want to win these dual meets, but it's the conferencechampionships that we're focused on," she said.
Ball State hosts Miami University Saturday at 1 p.m. in the homeopener.
