Muncie Mayor Dan Canan won a third term in office Tuesday night -- an unprecedented victory in modern Muncie politics.
Canan beat Democratic challenger Dennis Tyler by 453 votes. It was the closest margin of victory in Canan's three mayoral wins.
No Muncie mayor has been elected to three straight terms since the 1800s, Jonna Reece, Canan's campaign manager said. The last was a Democrat.
Muncie's Democratic party was not entirely defeated, though. All three Democratic candidates for At-Large City Council seats defeated their Republican opponents. Alison Quirk earned more votes than any other candidate, followed by William O. Shroyer and Chuck Leonard. Tommy Rector earned the most votes for the Republicans, followed by Dan MacDonald and Mike Dague, respectively.
