The votes are in, and Muncie mayor Dan Canan won re-election,defeating Dennis Tyler in the city election on Tuesday. Canan willstart his third mayoral term.
Under Canan, Muncie has seen many improvements. Most recently, according to biomuncie.org, Canan helped form a RedevelopmentCommission planning stategies to culturally and economicallyrejuvenate the south side of Muncie.
He's helped create jobs and opportunities for new businesses, and he's begun revitalizing the downtown area. In an articlepublished in The Star Press, Canan said, "We have worked closelywith former Congressman David McIntosh and current Congressman MikePence to obtain federal grants for the revitalization of all ofMuncie." He said the collaboration, and securing support fromSenators Lugar and Bayh, has led to millions of dollars receivedfor city development.
Canan also said his administration is allied with the MuncieHousing Authority, and together they have successfully obtained a$12.3 million grant. Canan said the grant will eventually lead toan estimated $36 million being invested in Muncie.
It's clear Canan has done much to improve the city in which weall live. Whether you voted in the election or not, Ball StateUniversity is still a big part of Muncie, and Canan's policies willaffect us. Students should follow his administration closely tomake sure it continues to act in the city's and the university'sbest interests. We have a louder voice than we think, and we caninfluence Canan to continue pushing to improve Muncie.
"I think our opportunities are bright," Canan said, in anotherarticle published in The Star Press. "It's a tough arena, but ifyou don't play hard, you're going to be left behind."
Here's to playing hard.
