LETTER: Mother affirms professor's claims

Dear Editor,

Prof. John Prince's letter in the Nov. 11 Daily News did an excellent job of summarizing the situation: An inexperienced officer had a series of errors in judgment and action dealing with an inebriated citizen.

The officer used an inappropriate amount of force in the situation. There is no way Michael McKinney deserved to die. Professor Prince is also correct in stating the police will de-emphasize the fact that Mr. McKinney was unarmed and will emphasize an officer's rationale for what happened.

Why did Officer Duplain shoot so quickly when his partner was just a few seconds from the scene? Why did he shoot to kill? [Duplain shot McKinney four times in the torso instead of a single warning shot or a shot at the leg or foot.] Why do inexperienced officers have overnight duty on or near campus when their training is incomplete?

As a parent of an incoming freshman, I am horrified and saddened by this situation.
