LETTER: Michael McKinney was ready to begin new chapter in life

Dear Editor:

Michael McKinney was beginning to change. Nights of collegepranks and panty raids were replaced with résuméworkshops and on-campus interviews. He was set to graduate in Mayand a new chapter in his life was going to begin. That promisingfuture was taken away in a few short seconds on a cold Saturdaymorning.

Like most of Mike's friends, I experienced disbelief, sadnessand then anger -- disbelief when I received the call Saturdaymorning, sadness when I gathered with friends to remember and mournMike and anger when I heard the University Police Department'sanswer to why my friend and fraternity brother was killed.

How can these people, whose creed is "to serve and protect,"justify sending a rookie with a little more than a weekend'straining out alone? How can they justify four gunshots? Isn't thatwhy police have partners, training officers and, most importantly, warning shots? The University Police Department has a lot to answerto the community. Foremost, what is going to change to ensure thatthis never happens again? This wasn't some drug dealer or burglarwho was killed. This was a business major, a friend, a brother anda son. All of those who knew and loved Mike were blessed with awarm smile and his caring friendship. What a tragedy that he wastaken away suddenly and so violently.
