Dear Editor,
I am writing in response to President Brownell resigning hisposition at Ball State University. As a senior member of the trackand field team, I feel that the president has done this universityand community an extreme injustice by cutting the men's crosscountry and track and field teams and severely slashing the budgetsof several other sports programs.
Athletics provide this university with diversity and topstudents, many of whom actually pay tuition to attend here. Themembers of the men's track team have held a GPA better than 3.0 thelast several years (one of the top-five-team GPAs in the entirecountry) and brought several Academic All-Americans to theuniversity.
Bubba Cunningham, athletics director, was quoted on Oct. 21saying, "I think (President Brownell's) support of athletics hasbeen terrific."
How is that Mr. Cunningham? Not one president in the last20-plus years has cut athletic programs. How can he be an athleticsupporter?
Well, President Brownell, you can still redeem yourself beforeyou leave here by reinstating the athletic programs at Ball State.Bill Clinton granted 456 clemency actions, including pardons, before he left office. George H. Bush granted 77 before he wasthrough, and Ronald Reagan granted 406.
President Brownell, you can do this university and members ofthis community one decent act before you leave: Grant us onepardon. I, along with the 2,221 individuals that signed ourpetition (www.saveballstatetrack.com), challenge you before youleave office to grant one pardon: Please reinstate men's track andfield and cross country at Ball State University. It is not toolate; there is still time for you to be a "supporter ofathletics."
